What are cookies?
A cookie is a small text file which is placed on your computer’s hard drive when you visit some websites. Each cookie has a name and stores a value. They allow web applications to respond to you as an individual.

Cookie expiration
When a cookie is set, it is given an expiry date. This is the date that your browser will automatically remove it from your computer. When you re-visit a website, the expiry date can be updated to maintain the cookie. Cookies can also be set to expire as soon as you leave a website, when you close your browser, or when you restart your computer. These are called ‘session variables’ or ‘session cookies’ and they are used to keep track of your actions within a website. Some session variables are essential for a website to function properly, such as websites that you log-into for example.
